International Journal on Advanced Science, Engineering and Information Technology (IJASEIT) Vol.16, No.4, Aug 2026 | Development of a Hybrid Proportional–Resonant and Proportional–Integral Controller for Three-Phase Induction Motor Drives
This study presents the development and evaluation of a hybrid proportional–resonant and proportional–integral (PR–PI) controller for three-phase induction motor drives. The proposed control structure applies a proportional–integral controller in the outer speed loop to generate the torque reference, while a proportional–resonant controller is implemented in the inner current loop to improve sinusoidal stator current tracking in the stationary reference frame. The main objective is to overcome the limitation of conventional PI current controllers, which tend to produce steady-state tracking errors, distorted current waveforms, torque ripple, and increased total harmonic distortion under inverter-fed operation. The induction motor drive system was modeled and simulated using PLECS under start-up and variable-speed operating conditions. The performance of the proposed PR–PI controller was compared with that of a conventional PI-based control scheme in terms of rotor speed response, electromagnetic torque behavior, stator current waveform quality, and harmonic characteristics. Simulation results show that the conventional PI controller produces a high-speed overshoot of approximately 30–35%, a torque peak of about 200 Nm, and stator current total harmonic distortion of 6.28%. In contrast, the proposed PR–PI controller reduces the speed overshoot to below 5%, limits the torque peak to approximately 30 Nm, and decreases the stator current THD to about 2.9%. These results confirm that the hybrid PR–PI control strategy provides improved transient damping, smoother torque production, balanced sinusoidal stator currents, and better harmonic performance for high-performance induction motor drive applications.
